When Backlash set out to create a premium experiential activation for Sunglass Hut in London's Covent Garden, the challenge was to deliver a space that combined standout visual impact, customer engagement and flawless operational delivery.
Working alongside the agency team, The Events Structure transformed its Gallery Plus container into a completely bespoke branded environment. Featuring a custom timber-clad exterior, pitched roof structure, immersive internal fit-out, branded catwalk and GlamBOT photo experience, the activation looked far removed from its original form.
Delivered within the logistical constraints of one of London's busiest public spaces, the project demonstrates how adaptable activation infrastructure can help agencies bring ambitious creative concepts to life while reducing operational complexity.
Here's a closer look at how the activation was designed, built and delivered.
Creating a Bespoke Environment for Sunglass Hut
Every successful brand activation starts with a strong creative concept.
For this project, the goal was to create a highly branded space that reflected Sunglass Hut's identity while providing multiple opportunities for customer engagement.
The starting point was our Gallery Plus container, chosen for its flexible footprint and ability to adapt to the creative brief.
Rather than using the structure in its standard format, the design called for a complete visual transformation. The challenge was not simply to provide a structure but to create a destination that felt purpose-built for the campaign.
This approach allowed the activation to combine the practical benefits of a modular environment with the visual impact expected from a premium pop up brand activation.
Transforming Gallery Plus Beyond Recognition
One of the most striking aspects of the project was the level of customisation.
A bespoke timber-clad framework was constructed around the Gallery Plus before being wrapped with branded tension fabric graphics. This completely transformed the appearance of the structure, replacing the original corrugated finish with a smooth, premium aesthetic aligned with the campaign design.
The transformation continued above the structure.
A custom metal roof frame was built to create a pitched roof profile, turning the flat-roofed container into a distinctive branded "hut" design. Branded tension fabric was installed across the framework, while scalloped edging added further visual character.
Together, these elements created an environment that felt entirely unique to Sunglass Hut.
Inside the activation, the experience was equally considered.
Bespoke shelving and custom countertops were designed specifically for the project, creating a premium product display environment. Mirrored feature walls enhanced product presentation, while a DJ booth helped bring energy and atmosphere to the space throughout the campaign.
Printed graphics extended across both the floor and ceiling, ensuring visitors were immersed in the brand from every angle.
Designing a Connected Customer Journey
The most effective brand experiences are those where every element works together.
To support interaction and content creation, the activation extended beyond the main structure itself.
A bespoke catwalk was constructed from the activation, extending outward before turning into an L-shaped layout. This guided visitors towards a dedicated photo opportunity featuring a GlamBOT installation.
The catwalk connected multiple engagement points while encouraging movement throughout the space, helping create a more immersive visitor journey.
Behind the scenes, our team also delivered power distribution to the various activation elements, ensuring the structure, lighting, photo experience and supporting features operated seamlessly throughout the campaign.
These details are often unseen by visitors, but they play a critical role in delivering a successful brand activation.
When everything works as intended, the audience can focus entirely on the experience.
Delivering a Covent Garden Activation Under Tight Constraints
Creative ambition is only one part of a successful activation.
The ability to deliver safely, efficiently and on schedule is equally important.
Covent Garden is one of London's most recognisable public spaces, but it also presents significant logistical challenges. Strict vehicle access restrictions and tightly controlled installation windows leave little room for error.
To meet the project's requirements, much of the fabrication and preparation work was completed before arriving on site.
The bespoke structure was built over a two-week period before being transported to London for installation. With limited access time available, careful planning and coordination were essential to ensure every component was installed efficiently and in the correct sequence.
For agencies managing client expectations, deadlines and multiple suppliers, this level of preparation helps reduce risk and provides confidence that the campaign will be delivered as planned.
The Value of Flexible Activation Infrastructure
One of the reasons experiential marketing campaigns continue to use modular structures is their flexibility.
The Gallery Plus provided the foundation for this project, but the finished environment looked entirely unique to Sunglass Hut's campaign.
By combining a proven structural base with bespoke fabrication, branding and customer journey design, the activation delivered both creative freedom and operational practicality.
For agencies and brand teams, this approach simplifies delivery while allowing ambitious ideas to become reality.
Bringing Brand Experiences to Life
The most successful brand activations are the result of strong creative ideas supported by careful planning, collaboration and reliable delivery.
For Sunglass Hut and Backlash, this Covent Garden activation demonstrates how an adaptable structure can become the foundation for a completely bespoke brand experience when the right partners are involved from the start.
At The Events Structure, we work alongside agencies and brand teams to transform concepts into real-world environments that engage audiences, simplify delivery and support successful experiential marketing campaigns.
